A guide to Education, Health and Care (EHC Plans)

EHC Plans replaced statements of Special Educational Needs and Learning Difficulty Assessments (LDAs) which apply in some post 16 settings with effect from 1st September 2014. This means that:

  • New requests for assessment of Special Educational Needs from 1st September 2014  will  be completed under the EHC Plan process. This applied to all children and young people aged 0-25
  • It also means that anyone currently in receipt of a Statement of Special Educational Needs or a Learning Difficulty Assessment will have these transferred to an EHC Plans between September 2014 and April 2018.

EHC plans bring a child or young person’s Educational, Health and Social Care needs together into one place which means that provision to meet the needs of each individual child or young person is co-ordinated across all agencies with a clear focus on raising aspirations and delivering better outcomes.

EHC needs assessments and plans are covered in Chapter 9 of the SEND Code of Practice 0-25 which is accessible through the buttons below, however we have extracted some of the key elements of the code below and included the relevant extract from the code under each section to assist you in quickly accessing the information you need.

We hope that you find this section useful and if you need any further information, advice or support, please get in contact with our SEND IAS Officer who can review your specific needs needs.
